Our History

QueerSapmi was born from the heart and mind of our founder, Jeffery Lopez, who envisioned a platform that combines the rich cultural heritage of the Sámi people with the contemporary struggles and triumphs of the queer community. Jeffery's journey began in 2020, inspired by his own experiences as a queer individual of mixed heritage navigating societal expectations and cultural ties. The relentless desire to bridge these experiences led to the conception of QueerSapmi—a digital narrative reflecting the colorful tapestry that is queer Sápmi.

From its inception, QueerSapmi has evolved into a crucial resource for individuals seeking connections and affirmation. Our history is deeply intertwined with the stories of countless individuals who have contributed to the site, thus creating a platform where local histories come alive through shared lived experiences.

The Founder: Jeffery Lopez

Jeffery Lopez is a recognized activist and writer, dedicated to advocating for the rights of marginalized communities. With a background in sociology and queer studies, he has always aimed towards achieving social justice and empowerment for everyone. His experiences shaped him into a person zealously committed to carving spaces for underrepresented groups. His thought leadership, passion for community, and intuitive understanding of social dynamics have been instrumental in guiding QueerSapmi on its journey.

Driven by the need to celebrate authentic narratives—particularly those of queer Sámi individuals—Jeffery and his team set out to create a unique online haven, steering the conversation toward inclusive dialogues and intersections of identity.
